GSD Colony Brown German Shepherd Harness

Choosing the Right Harness for Your German Shepherd

In today's world, your choice is limitless. There are a million species of GSD harness and collars with a variety of colors, designs, and materials. But how do I know what suits my dog best? Harness or collars? If the dog pulls you too much during the walk, then a harness is the right choice for you.

When should I use Harness and when a collar?

A harness is a good option when you go with your German Shepherd to walking, running, hiking, or biking. Collars are a good option for patrolling the yard, play date, dog park. We use a harness when we plan to have more physical activity (running with the dog, hiking...) instead of a light walk. Collars we will leave for another blog post, now, let's talk about how to choose a harness for my German Shepherd.

When to choose a harness instead of collars?

You have to think more about what suits the dog than you. If your German Shepherd has neck problems, if you have a puppy, or if your dog is a smaller breed the collar may tighten your dog too much during the walk. A harness fastens around your pet’s body and has a leash loop near the shoulders. This means that the harness removes the pressure that collars create on your dog's neck.

There are many types of harnesses, your choice depends on your taste and your dog’s size and personality.

Standard Harness

The standard type of harness distributes the force of the leash against a dog’s chest and back, which best suits small dogs. However, this is not the best option for large and strong dogs, because it allows them to pull hard against the leash.

No-pull Harness

A no-pull harness can reduce the pulling force of your dog, but it cannot eradicate that habit. When you remove the no-pull harness, it is very possible that the dog will continue to pull you very hard. But how a no-pull harness can help me? A properly fit harness can prevent neck strain other health problems that would arise during too much strain on your dog’s neck while wearing a collar.

The Right size and Fir of German Shepherd Harness

It is very important that you choose a good style and dimension of a harness for your dog. Too little harness can be more annoying than good for your dog. Every millimeter counts, take care when measuring the dimensions of your dog. Harnesses generally have adjustable belts with which you can adjust the harness just as it suits your dog. If the dimensions of your dog are just on the border between two sizes, it is better to take a larger size. Better to be a little more comfortable for your dog, than to tighten your dog too much.

We hope we have been able to help you! Remember, the harness should suit your dog, not you. We know that sometimes it's hard to choose a design that we don't really like, but if our dog is comfortable and happy, then we are happy too!
